DIY Home Office Ideas during COVID-19 Lockdown

Updated: Jan 19, 2021

Who doesnt want a premium corner in their homes nowadays, to take care of all office chores? Its a no-brainer, as many of today's corporate elite have returned to their hometowns to Work from Home (WFH). But as the Lockdown continues, and there seems no 5 day office presence required in near future, it seems the onus of making most of the situation has been left to the Corporate employees. How happy they are at work will now also depend largely on how happy they themselves are able to make their workspace.

Here are a few ideas to help you get your thinking caps on, and carry out your office work like a pro that you are...! :)

1. Mark your Territory - This goes without saying. You will get serious about your office desk facelift, once you are able to identify one space in your house, that you can un-contestedly claim your own. It can be a whole room, or just a 5' clear wall with low home traffic (read kids, dogs, mom... :P ).

2. Identify the Light source - So if your selected corner has natural lighting - a big bay window, with a view, nothing like it, you can skip to next tip ;) . For most of us not so lucky commoners, fret not..! LED technology will come to your rescue. Be it a table-lamp, a tube, or a hanging bulb, mark my words --- Light up..!

3. Watch out for Ergonomy - Cannot stress this enough. Sitting 8 hours a day is no joke. Humans were not meant to be sedentary creatures. It takes a toll on our health, but our employers graciously provide us with the most ergonomic furniture in the office premises. Invest in a basic chair and table. The set would hardly cost around 8000 bucks, but having it in your life will change the WFH experience entirely. Your spine will thank you for investing in yourself in the next few years. Some employers like google have even given allowances to their employees to cover furniture costs. See if your company can reimburse your expenses.

4. Uncompromised Wi-fi - Well, to the metropolitan kids, it might sound like a Moo- point, but even today, in smaller towns like Ranchi, Bokaro, Patna, wi-fi in households is simply not common. Even optic lines at times do not reach our childhood homes. Again, catch-hold of a local internet guy, buddy up, and coax him to bring the fibre to your home. This investment is now being reimbursed by most employers (do check for upper cap though, as most cities, these rates vary)

5. Play with Colors wall Decals - Now that the basics are sorted, never underestimate the power of color and graphics. Your selected spot might have a weirdly drab color wall as background, but there is nothing a bright, inspiring wall decal, cannot spruce up. Check out below some amazing professional links from Amazon. Its bright, cheery, inexpensive and super -fun. Who said only kids can play with stickers?

6. Personalize it - Your softboard misses you. Even when you are home, your achievements, those Legend Awards, cards from colleagues, or any other memorabilia, help you stay connected to your professional ethics, even in your home environment. You can also add colorfull photoframes, a wall shelf, an organizer, or a magnetic slate, nothing says 'work -space' like your company outing framed photo.

7. Wake -up your Green Thumb - Plants literally bring life to your table. They say greenery is a great stress-buster. Looking at it is soothing, and helps calm jitters from difficult office situations. When you are having a not so good day, get up, and water your plants, or prune them, or just look at them for a while, they are the most reliable friends who live to make you happy. Some great indoor plants for Indian home- offices are - Snake Plant, Peace lily, Lucky bamboo, Ferns, Grape Ivy, Palm
