Ranchi is a beautiful erstwhile hill-station, with one of the best livable climates among Indian cities, and ample rain and sunshine. Monsoons in Ranchi are to die for, with sunny mornings, and wet evenings filled with the scent of earth and a pleasant breeze. Summers are very short here, but rain-showers are common for almost all of 2nd half of the year. Ranchiites , with their Happy-go -lucky nature do not complain, infact in their Heart of hearts, they crave this no matter which part of the world they are in.
This lockdown has given many Millennials a chance to come back to their hometown, and we at Luxxus Design Studio are doing our best to cater to their refined needs by presenting an array of modular furniture.
The question now is, how to make sure that your wooden furniture stays in super condition, even after braving Ranchi monsoons.
Here are some Pro tips -
Long gone are the days of Steel furniture. They are cold, noisy and unclassy. Processed wood furniture is the in thing and is flaunted by all modern households. However, modular wardrobes made of plywood or MDF can trap moisture when up against an external wall. This can cause dampness in the clothes stored inside, which is ground for fungus and bacteria to thrive. Once the structure becomes damp, corrections is very expensive , and the damage is too much. So we must look into how to prevent this from happening in the first place ?
Check for dampness marks
You need to check this on walls before installing the wardrobes. You need to be extra careful if it is a West wall, as direction of wing is generally from that side. Waterproofing is a must, especially if it is a 5 inch exterior wall, You can opt for a treatment with Dr. Fixit or any other waterproofing solution suggested by your contractor.
Prepare the surface with a backing sheet
These 2 mm ACP sheets are inexpensive, longterm solution to give you peace of mind. The little extra cost and effort will go a long way in ensuring quality that will last a lifetime. Just ensure that you have treated any existing mildew with fresh coat of paint and disinfectant, so that the root cause is tackled.
Napthalene Balls are a lifesaver
Mothballs , commonly known as napthalene locally, are dessicants that help keep areas dry by absorbing moisture from the air. This also helps keep clothes smelling fresh all year long. For people who want to go the more natural way, camphor tablets can be used as replacement. Silica gel bags and charcoal pouches also do the trick.
Wardrobes too need love
The new hobby around the block is 'Organising'. There is a whole array of Organisation products available on Amazon from sellers like Miniso. Stock up on some dividers, hooks and transparent boxes, and compartmentalise your cupboard to keep it tidy. This helps in optimizing space and keeping space clutter free. This will come handy when you Deep clean it once a month - yes you heard me correct..! That is the frequency of cleaning that spells mint fresh wardrobes year on year.
Let the insides breathe
Keep the shutters open once in a while, and dust it lightly to not allow any dampness to settle. You can also take an air-dryer and quickly blow-dry your wardrobe sometimes, especially during monsoons. Its always better to be safe than sorry.
Do not Sin
Never, never, ever let me catch you with a damp towel anywhere near your wardrobe. That is one of the cardinal sins. Make sure you only store sun-dried fresh clothes in the wardrobe. You must ideally not re-wear a sweaty T-shirt without washing it, but, if you are a lazy baby, find a hook..! Or request your designer for a separate cheat compartment which can be kept far away from your Winter wardrobe.
Sun is your wardrobe's best friend
Do you have a window from where sunrays can directly fall in your wardrobe at any time of the day? Well, let it. Use the happy Ranchi sunshine to naturally sanitize your stylish clothes.
All that I have suggested is not far from what Grandma might have practiced during her time, but it seems we either have forgotten these nuggets of wisdom or are too pre-occupied to implement them. Well, no amount of Glossy laminates will give you your money's worth if you are not ready to be a bit caring towards your storage areas. Hope this helped...! Happy Home-making... :)
